Peter J. M. Peterson, D.M.D., M.S.D.

Dr. Peterson graduated from Vassar College in 1978 and received his D.M.D. degree from Tufts University in 1982. Following graduation he completed a General Practice Residency at the VA Medical Center in Salt Lake City and then served three years on active duty as a general dentist in the US Air Force.

Dr. Peterson then completed a two-year specialty residency in Periodontics at the VA Medical Center in Indianapolis and earned his Master’s Degree from Indiana University. Upon completing his specialty training, Dr. Peterson moved back to New England and joined the periodontal practice of Dr. John A. Bierly. In addition to private practice, Dr. Peterson has been on the attending staff at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center since 1989.

A firm believer in continuing education he not only attends many courses each year but actively participates in teaching the General Practice Residents at St Francis and has twice received the Teacher of the Year Award.

He is also past-president of the Connecticut Society of Periodontists and co-founder of both the Farmington Valley Dental Hygiene Study Club and the Consortium for Dental Excellence. He is a frequent lecturer for these groups.

On a Personal Note

Dr. Peterson is married and lives with his wife and two teen-age sons in West Hartford. He enjoys outdoor activities with his family, particularly skiing and backpacking. Dr. Peterson is an active member of Saint James Episcopal Church, West Hartford.


John A. Bierly, D.M.D.

Dr. Bierly founded his Simsbury periodontal practice in 1976. He is a graduate of Dickinson College, where he earned a B.S. degree in Biology. He was recognized as the outstanding sophomore and junior student and served in junior and senior honoraries. He then earned his general dental degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. There he received honors in both Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry.

Following dental school, Dr. Bierly served two years on active duty in the US Army Dental Corps. and received the Commandant’s Award for distinguished service. He received his specialty training in Periodontics at the West Los Angeles VA hospital University of Southern California program. With his fellow residents he published three papers in the Journal of Periodontology on bone grafting and cryopreservation of bone.

He also is a dental staff member of McLean Home in Simsbury and has chaired the Continuing Education Committee of the Hartford Dental Society. On a Personal Note

Dr. Bierly and his wife, Judith, reside in West Hartford and are the proud parents of three daughters and one granddaughter.
